| Summary |
Eleven-year-old Chala lives alone with his addicted mother and trains fighting dogs to make ends meet. This environment of violence sometimes seeps into his school life. Chala has great respect for his sixth-grade teacher, Carmela, but when Carmela becomes ill and is forced to leave the classroom for several months, a new teacher, unable to handle Chala's behavior, takes action. Upon her return, Carmela opposes the harsh measures and other changes in her class. The relationship between the veteran teacher and the child becomes increasingly strong, but this commitment will jeopardize the place of both teacher and student in school |
