Summary The group that put Off-Broadway on the map had mounted 100 plays and established itself as a major force in contemporary American theater when this film was made to commemorate its first quarter century. In this review of its origins and successes theater critic Margaret Croyden talks to some of The Circle's leading lights. Interviewed are founder Ted Mann, his associate Paul Libin, and several celebrated actors who had valuable early experience there. In honest, revealing and often humorous reminiscences Dustin Hoffman, Colleen Dewhurst, George C. Scott, James Earl Jones, Paul Rudd and Vanessa Redgrave discuss acting, ambition, and their life with The Circle in the Square. Performance excerpts include Scott in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman, Jones in Vinnette Carroll's adaptation of Trumpets of the Lord by James Weldon Johnson, Dewhurst and Stephen McHattie in Eugene O'Neill's Mourning Becomes Elektra, and Redgrave and Pat Hingle in Ibsen's Lady From the Sea.
