Summary This year marks the 95th Anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign and ABC TV will once again send a team to Gallipoli to cover ANZAC Day commemorations.Returning this year for her second presentation of this milestone broadcast will be ABC TV's Message Stick presenter, Miriam Corowa, who said, 'It's both a thrill and an honour to be heading back to Gallipoli for the ABC's broadcast of the Dawn Service and the Lone Pine Service in 2010. The event holds a special place in the hearts of all Australians and simply being on the soil where so many extraordinary feats of courage, sacrifice and survival took place, reminds one of the very best qualities we all aspire to live by.'The ABC team will cover the Dawn Service from the Anzac Commemorative site at Cannakale, North Beach in Turkey and the Lone Pine Commemorative Service, where one of the most famous assaults of the Gallipoli campaign took place. The Battle of the Lone Pine is remembered as a rarity for the ANZAC, a 'success' at the price of 2200 Australians and about 7000 Turks killed or wounded. The Turks had cut down all but one of the Aleppo pines that grew on the ridge to cover their trenches. This tree was whittled away by shell fire in the early battles. Australian soldiers called it 'Lonesome Pine' after a popular song of the time. Some pine cones from the ridge were brought back to Australia, and thousands of pine trees now grow in Australia propagated from the Gallipoli cones. One tree raised from the seed now grows in the Lone Pine Cemetery at Gallipoli.Coverage will also include ANZAC DAY marches in each state and the commemorative ceremonies from Villers-Bretonneux in France and Gallipoli on ABC1
