Summary The paper boy (48 min.): It's going to be a bleak Christmas for the Riordans when Joe's father gets the sack in December, 1932. The money 13 year old Joe gets from selling papers is all they have. Then Joe and his dad have a fight. Joe leaves home and lives on the streets, battling with his wits and his fists as he gets to know the city and its characters - the down and outs, the communist agitators, the Sallies. Persuaded by his mother, Joe returns home for Christmas to an uneasy truce with his father but the situation changes when his father finds a job and realises his son is now a man
Boy soldiers (48 min.): In 1910 the Australian Government passed a law requiring boys aged between 15 and 17 to register for compulsory military training. This is the story of Will Barnes, a 14 year old conscientious objector who refuses to register
