In the first instalment of Iconoclasts, screening on ABC2, viewers travel into the private worlds of these two famous icons, discovering how they take time out of their busy lives to nurture a tight friendship away from the spotlight.When Eddie Vedder isn't on tour as the lead singer and guitarist for the highly influential band Pearl Jam, he's chilling with surfer Laird Hamilton, tackling the big waves in Hawaii. As a child, Vedder always dreamed of surfing in Hawaii, but his path took another direction when, at 26 years of age, his band skyrocketed to fame during the Seattle 'grunge' music explosion of the early 1990s. He now fulfills his childhood dream by hanging out and riding a few waves with Hamilton off the coast of Maui. It's also his chance to rest the vocal chords and relax away from the spotlight that comes with being the lead singer of a band that has sold more than 60 million albums worldwide.Recognised as the guiding genius of board sports, Laird Hamilton is known as one of the best big-wave surfers and pioneers of the sport. He is also a partner in a production company, Bam Man Films which recently released the film All Aboard the Crazy Train, a look at the state of big-wave surfing today.
