Summary
This report focuses on some of the water-related issues impacting the United States' ability to unleash domestic energy resources. Sustainable and publically acceptable water management practices are essential for both conventional and unconventional oil and gas production. Recycling and beneficial reuse of the growing quantity of produced water that will be generated by oil and gas production have the potential to bolster public acceptance and use water resources wisely. This report promotes the idea that sustainable water strategies require that produced water be considered as an asset rather than as a waste. It provides a summary of the issues, barriers, and recommendations for public policymakers as they grapple with strategies to treat produced water as an asset in the toolbox of water management practices
