Summary "Last month a court decision granted the Noongar people of Perth native title over the city's metropolitan area. It's the first time native title has been granted over a metropolitan city. The court found that the Noongar people, Perth's original inhabitants, were able to prove they had an ongoing connection with the land. Previous claimants have failed to prove this 'ongoing connection'. The decision has met with a mixed reaction. The Noongar people are pleased that their traditional link with the land has been acknowledged, but critics question whether it means that the use of public lands might be altered. The Federal Government and the Western Australian government have lodged appeals against the decision. An the Federal Labor leader, Kim Beazley has backed the appeal by the state government. In a special edition of INSIGHT recorded in Perth, the Noongar people, as well as Federal Attorney General Phillip Ruddock, ALP President Warren Mundine, and the West Australian Deputy Premier, Eric Ripper debate the issues."--SBS Website
