Summary |
One of the most intriguing British novelist and poet of recent years, Trinidadian-born Anthony Joseph has more than a few strings to his bow. In 2005 the British Council selected him as one of the 50 black and Asian writers to have made a major contribution to national literature, and they chose wisely: Joseph has published several celebrated poetry collections, as well as novels *The African Origins of UFOs and Kitch: A Fictional Biography of a Calypso Icon*. But it is a full fourteen minutes before we hear him talking in this 2018 performance at the Moods Club in Zurich. Instead, his group cook up a groove that builds and permeates the room around it, conjuring trance and getting bodies moving. On top, Joseph's vocals are impressive: he has impeccable rhythm, a decent dose of charisma, and when he lets his voice roar, the squeezed tone recalls something of Jimi Hendrix' roughness. When he eventually addresses the audience in speech, Joseph offers context to his pieces, working in Trinidadian cultural references so that a European audience might better connect to the lyrics. At one point he teases the album *People of the Sun*, which was due for release in the months following this performance. On the record and on stage, Joseph blends elements of Caribbean soul, funk and jazz, while showcasing his ability to tell stories that draw together disparate histories. --Rowan Standish Hayes |
