Summary “True Australian Sea Stories is an adventurous and exciting book by an experienced seaman. He writes of storm, shipwreck, piracy, gold robbery, heroism in its many facets, and the stirring exploits of men against the sea. His stories range from the early convict days of Tasmania and New South Wales through to the Second World War. Some cast new light on historic events: others are of little-known happenings, such as the shipboard bullion robberies during the great goldmining days--in 1877, the bullion box containing 500 gold sovereigns mysteriously disappeared from the strongroom of the Avoca, and this was just one isolated case. There are accounts of the numerous wrecks around the coast of King Island, in Bass Strait; the strange story of the Success which was in turn an emigrant ship, a prison hulk, and a 'convict museum show boat'; and the story of the raider Shenandoah which visited Melbourne during the American Civil War. Her officers and crew were feted against a background of diplomatic arguments. Jack Millar writes of collisions at sea, some with appalling loss of life and others more fortunate, of disasters like the sinking of the Gothenburg in a cyclone off the Queensland coast, and many more historic events in Australian nautical history.”--Book jacket
