Summary |
After attending President Bush's State of the Union address in January 2004, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom was upset about the President's call for a Constitutional Amendment banning same-sex marriage. In his new role as mayor of San Francisco, Newsom decided he would do what he could to end discrimination in his city. At his urging, the city began performing gay and lesbian marriages beginning February 12, 2004. On that day, the first legal same-sex marriage in California took place, uniting Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, founders of the first lesbian-rights organization and celebrating their 51st anniversary. Filmmaker Debra Chasnoff effectively captures the atmosphere of this highly emotional and politically significant ceremony |
