Summary Annotation "In this book, Geoffrey Block examines for the first time the entire range of Rodgers's work, providing rich details about the creation, staging, and critical reception of some of his most popular musicals." "Block traces Rodgers's musical education, his early work, and the development of his musical and dramatic language. He focuses on two Rodgers and Hart shows: A Connecticut Yankee, their longest-running musical of the 1920s and the only show that they chose to revise and revive, and The Boys from Syracuse, the first Broadway musical based on Shakespeare and one of the few 1930s musicals to enjoy frequent revivals. The central chapter, on Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific, explores the translation of James Michener's popular novel to the stage and reveals how the subsequent film and televised broadcast reflected the sensibilities of their different eras. In a second Rodgers and Hammerstein chapter Block explains how (and why) the three televised versions of Cinderella reinterpreted a classic fairy tale for successive generations of viewers. He concludes with the first serious look at the five neglected and often maligned musicals that Rodgers composed in the 1960s and 1970s, after the death of Hammerstein."--BOOK JACKET.
