Summary The study describes the characteristics of the modern Western world, and then summarizes two important merits which it is considered to possess. It discusses the disadvantages and failures of the modern Western world, and shows the response of economics to its economic and social development. Practical answers to the historical challenges facing the modern Western world are analysed including the reformist (i.e. evolutionary), socialist and communist responses and fundamentalist answers. Conclusions are drawn about the basic problems in connection with the modern Western world and about possible ways in which to overcome them. Finally lessons relevant for economic science are outlined
