Summary |
The Western Balkans is a region in flux. As the United States and Europe focus on internal concerns, Russia and other countries are reshaping the geopolitical landscape across the region. Meanwhile, a new generation of investors and entrepreneurs are primed to breathe new life into stagnant economies, but crime and corruption remain entrenched in the political and economic spheres, preventing successful implementation of needed reforms and endangering political support in Europe for further integration. Against a backdrop of enormous change and uncertainty, the United States, the European Union, and the Western Balkans have an opportunity. If we get it right, we can lead in creating a safe, secure, and prosperous western Balkans firmly embedded in the West. Get it wrong, and American ambivalence today may engender a crisis tomorrow, which in turn would demand a far greater degree of US engagement than would ever have been required to avoid a crisis in the first place |
