Notes Summary: "This collaborative project aimed to investigate risk and protective factors influencing the participation of Indigenous students in mainstream courses. Findings revealed risk and protective factors operated at individual, institutional and cultural levels. According to this paper, the Centre for Aboriginal Studies¿ social support and integration strategies were major protective factors for students. While participants acknowledged university wide initiatives to increase Indigenous participation, they emphasised that a greater willingness from mainstream staff to learn from Aboriginal people would positively contribute to Aboriginal participation in education. Students also acknowledged perseverance, clear goals, a sound knowledge of the system and good study and organisational skills were necessary for successful study. The process of researching, in itself, raised awareness of the types of issues faced by Indigenous Australians in mainstream higher education."
