Summary Zimbabwe - under despot Robert Mugabe - is a bleak and beaten place with a long and appalling catalogue of human rights abuses. But until now very little was known about an army-led attack on diamond prospectors who_d been scratching around in a diamond rich a place called Marange, near Zimbabwe_s border with Mozambique.It_s a bountiful place - 26 square kilometres - where individuals and bigger operators might strike it rich. Only problem is Marange diamonds have been banned from world markets since 2009 because they_re considered blood diamonds - gems that have emerged from nations in conflict. But who_d have thought Marange itself would become a killing field?Marange was a magnet for everyday Zimbabweans desperate to find a way to feed their families and make a living. They flocked to the area to try their luck. In one of the world_s poorest countries, a place where billions of dollars of gems lay hidden was tantalising. If they were lucky they might happen upon a find, make some kind of living and surely they could find a way to get these blacklisted gems to market. But their activities weren_t going unnoticed. Suddenly somewhere the orders came down and soldiers moved in on the camps in a blaze of gunfire and brutality. How many people were tortured and how many died - when these army goons stormed into the diamond field ? In a dangerous undercover assignment a BBC Panorama team has gathered eye witness accounts, a pile of facts and documents and assembled a compelling case that gives startling magnitude to the onslaught and investigates who might have sanctioned the massacre.Reporter Hillary Anderssen also expose some big holes in the Kimberley Process which is supposed to ensure blood diamonds don_t find their way to market. Can we be sure that Marange diamonds and gems from other black-listed areas haven_t made into onto the international market and aren_t now on display and for sale in western jewellery stores?
