Summary |
"Recent developments in China's major cities have given rise to diverse sentiments ranging from wariness and repulsion to anticipation and confidence. This preliminary study attempts to keep up with the endless and drastic transformations of Shanghai in recent years. By offering a bold, sweeping view of lifestyles, cultures and the urban phenomenon of Shanghai, the author hopes to give readers a captivating whiff of a highly contemporary force currently emerging in Shanghai. One might also come to realize that this new urban culture is shaped by various complex circumstances, imbued with a unique Chineseness while thoroughly engaged with the global. Shanghai thus offers an enticing opening point from where one can observe the curious intermingling of the local and global, as well as the premodern, modern and postmodern in China today. By going beyond a simplistic over-arching Western theoretical framework, the author attempts to enrich current perspectives on Asian cities while contemplating the concept of radical postmodern urbanism applied in the context of Shanghai. The author suggests that a new approach is badly needed in order to solve pressing problems of economic, social and environmental pressure on various Asian cities deadlocked in a struggle against western concepts of modernity, progress, globality and urban destruction."--back cover |
