The Nineties ; Series 1, Episode 4 |
Summary |
Bill Clinton's presidency got off to a rocky start. The most consequential of his initial missteps was his inability to reform America's health care system. As a result, the Republicans, led by Congressman Newt Gingrich gained control of both houses of Congress for the first time in decades. In addition to political problems at home, President Clinton faced military disaster in Somalia, genocide in Rwanda and ethnic cleansing in Bosnia. But as he always seemed to do, Clinton rebounded and was decisively re-elected in 1996. Just as the nation seemed to be settling into a period of genuine peace and prosperity the President was ensnared in a sex scandal with a White House intern leading to impeachment and increased political polarisation |
