Summary In the growing field of bioethics, the majority of ethical issues confronted by health care professionals arise near the end of life. Making decisions with and for a patient at or near the end of life is never easy. Emotions, family dynamics, cultural practices, finances, medical decisions and legal issues often intersect, and create difficult conflicts at a time when patients and family are most vulnerable. Spend time with Annette Prince, LCSW and J.D., and hear how her experience and training in palliative care ethics and law can help you recognize and assist in early resolution of conflicts in developing treatment goals for patients with life-limiting illness. "This seminar recording is focused on clinical ethics education for all health care professions. If everyone in the health profession understood core ethical issues, the result would be better patient care and resolution of conflicts before the escalation of physician, family or possible court disputes," notes Prince. A highlight of the recording will be the latest news in the developing field of clinical ethics consultation. The American Society of Bioethics and Humanities is in the process of certification of health professionals who assist in resolving ethics conflicts in hospitals, long-term care, hospice and home health environments. Formal knowledge of medical ethics will be a requirement for certification. Health care institutions need professionals who can recognize complex ethics issues and facilitate ethical decision-making
