Summary |
"It has recently been stated, on high authority, that 'there is scarcely a place for another life' of Wolfe; and I am fully aware of my rashness in writing this book. But, if we except Mrs. Wolfe-Aylward's Pictorial life of James Wolfe, which did not claim to be more than a commentary on its admirable illustrations, no biography of Wolfe has appeared for eighteen years. Meanwhile, newly-discovered evidence of great interest has shed fresh light on his character and exploits, and has been summarised and discussed in scattered articles or in books which are primarily concerned with other subjects. It seemed to me therefore that I was warranted in making an attempt to set down what scholarship now permits us to say and think about him"--Preface |
