| Summary |
Australians are now sending approximately one tonne of waste per person per year to landfill in Australia. Construction and demolition (C&D) waste can make up to 40 percent of this waste. These construction and demolition wastes are potentially valuable recoverable resources being wasted. Materials include metals, concrete and bricks (which can be crushed and reused), glass, fittings and fixtures from demolished or refurbished buildings (such as carpet underlay), wood, and wall panelling. For example, the ACT (ie population 350,000) now manages to recover more than 100,000 tonnes of construction and demolition debris per year (Biocycle, June 1997). The ACT waste resource recovery experience shows that there are large volumes of valuable recyclable materials awaiting the development of markets. Concerned about construction and demolition waste, the Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council (ANZECC) in 1995, approached five major Australian construction companies to pioneer best practice waste reduction in the industry. The Companies that volunteered to participate in the Program were: Fletcher Construction; John Holland; Multiplex; Lendlease (ie Civil and Civic); and Barclay Mowlem. They funded their own participation in the interests of developing leading edge solutions to waste reduction problems. It is evident from their efforts that they recognise their roles as leaders in the industry. Wastewise Construction is a program to pioneer industry best practice in waste reduction for the construction and demolition industry and thus significantly reduce material going to landfill. Companies agreed under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to contribute to the ANZECC target of reducing waste going to landfill by 50 percent by the year 2000 against 1990 per capita levels. The companies have acted in good faith under the agreement and demonstrated an excellent range of best practice solutions to waste reduction.
