Summary |
Juan De Marcos González is a cornerstone of Cuban music. Recognized thanks to the British label World Circuit via the Buena Vista Social Club and Afro-Cuban All Stars projects, the composer and conductor is without equal when it comes to restoring the very rich Hispanic repertoire of the Caribbean space. One naturally thinks of the African rhythms of the Gulf of Guinea, New York jazz syncopations, but also the classical contributions of the first part of the twentieth century. Present on the stage of the North Sea Jazz Festival with a sizeable band, (starting with some incredible colonies of percussions and brass instruments), the latter offers a breathtaking set in which long breaks on the piano collide, vocal jousts to determine the less headstrong, and even a finale in the form of a mini-symphony with its sophisticated rhythmic codes and its mischievous nod to Gloria Gaynor. Provided in steady tempos, this set from the Latin collective offers an ideal compendium of traditional or modern Cuban musical productions. Note that this performance is commercially available in addition to a live session recorded in Japan. The whole is dedicated to various deceased musicians including the immense Anga Díaz: fans take note. Vincent Caffiaux |
