Summary Gaddafi: Dead or Alive looks at the role played by the West in the last months of the Gaddafi regime, from the uprising in Benghazi to Muammar Gaddafi's capture and death in 2011.When the revolt broke out, Colonel Gaddafi had ruled Libya for over forty years. He had sponsored international terrorism and had survived a reprisal bombing by the US Air Force under President Reagan. But early in the twenty-first century, he had also made his peace with the West - or so he thought.Unnerved by the fate of Saddam Hussein and concerned about the threat that radical Islam posed to his regime, he cooperated in the US War on Terror and imprisoned many Libyan jihadists who were sent to him under the rendition program. The program follows the slow disintegration of Gaddafi's regime from the first spark of rebellion on 17 February 2011, when the army opened fire on a demonstration in Benghazi. Revolt spread like wildfire through the city and soon the rebels controlled all of Benghazi. With the intervention of NATO and US air power, it was only a matter of time before the rebel uprising succeeded and Gaddafi was finally hunted down and killed in Sirte on 21 October 2011.
