Summary This study assesses the importance of sustainable land management practices in terms of both returns to landholders and global greenhouse benefits, and indicates the way in which different assessments of greenhouse benefits may influence policy priorities. The study concludes that a greenhouse element should in future be specifically incorporated into all elements of the NLP and the National Vegetation Initiative, the regional focus in the NLP (including the greenhouse component) should be further strengthened, indicators of effectiveness should be developed and modified, and special attention should be given to areas such as agroforestry, the better management of rangeland areas, and the potential use of anti-methanogens in livestock
