Summary |
"Working as a prostitute in a karaoke bar, Sita sends most of her earnings to a distant village where her frail mother is looking after her five year old daughter. Sita soon leaves the oldest profession in the world behind after she is gang-raped by several customers set up by her overbearing pimp, Suroso. Meanwhile, aging photographer Johan operates a portrait business downtown from the karaoke bar. He lives alone and is clearly haunted by the mysterious photographs that sit on his meditation altar. The homeless Sita manages to convince the reluctant Johan to let her move into his vacant attic and earn her keep by cleaning Johan’s premises. When he announces that he is seeking an apprentice before his impending death, he dismisses the eager Sita’s candidacy because she is a woman. Unruffled, Sita helps Johan search for his successor, while her curiosity about photography and Johan’s history continue to grow." -- website |
