Summary |
In commemoration of the centenary of Benjamin Britten's birth, this documentary examines final opera in conjunction with the original story by Thomas Mann and the film by Luchino Visconti. Focusing on Britten's obsession with the novel, and the film, as inspirations for his final opera, it will also explore the parallels between Britten's personal story and the original by Mann. It looks at his complex and ambiguous relationship with his partner, the tenor Peter Pears, and some of his young proteges, and includes interviews with Bjorn Andresen, Robert Huguenin and the relatives of Mann's original.
