Summary |
Ballarat's Sweet Mona's Choir was initially formed in 1996 by Verity Higgins as a student choir to teach singing as an approach to teaching voice skills in a performing arts course. Today the Sweet Mona's Choir is one of Victoria's leading and most renowned community choirs and has become an embodiment of the remarkable power of community art.The Choir currently consists of around 30 singers, continuing the journey of the more than 100 community members who have passed through since inception. The singers can be students, unemployed, tradespeople, professionals, amateurs, old, young, rich, poor, and from diverse cultural backgrounds. This is a community choir in name, spirit and action.Sweet Mona's: The Big Sing traces the evolution of the Choir from its beginnings. With a rich source of material accumulated over more than ten years, a uniquely-inspiring story is told through the multiple voices of choir members, past and present. This is a story of longevity and how one small choir can have such a wonderful impact on a community |
