Summary |
Gifted with a velvet voice, Dennis Brown is a monument of Jamrock. First appearing in Sir Coxsone's circle with the beautiful "No Man Is An Island," the artist released, during the 70s, several classics including "Cassandra," "Wolf & Leopards," as well as a hit version of "Money In MyPocket." Renowned for his concerts (we remember an incandescent performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival), the man nicknamed The Crowned Prince of Reggae is captured here during a tour of the legendary Reggae Sunsplash Festival. Surrounded by a solid band including a set of backup singers and a brass section, Dennis Brown quickly gets into the groove with the swaying "Sitting And Watching," raises the bar with the vehement "Hypocrite," before advocating non-violence in dancehall mode with the iconic "Stop Your Fighting." Shadowed by a bass-drum line, he does not forget the Rasta mystique and the related Afrocentric message. The message is perceptible with the classic "Promised Land," a secular theme in which the singer invokes Addis Ababa, the epicenter of reggae preaching, but also Shashamane, an unknown Ethiopian territory today populated by the Caribbean followers of Haile Selassie. ...
