BERLUSCONI'S WOMENIn a special edition of Dateline from Italy, we look at Silvio Berlusconi's record on women's rights, as he stands accused by some of debasing Italian culture.This week marked a hundred years of International Women's Days, but when it comes to Italy's record on women, there's little to celebrate, and many blame Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.He's standing trial next month for paying a 17-year-old girl for sex, and for abusing his power to get her released from custody. There have also been a string of sex scandals and sexist remarks and controversy over political appointments given to showgirls and beauty contestants.And as a media mogul, 74-year-old Berlusconi has played a significant role in shaping popular culture, with Italian television serving up a diet of scantily-clad girls on entertainment shows. Video journalist Amos Roberts meets campaigner Lorella Zanardo, who tells him it's made the humiliation of women seem normal to young Italians, but Amos also finds women in politics and showbiz, who claim the Prime Minister is a champion of their rights.REVOLUTION'S REFUGEESA tiny Italian island has found itself at the forefront of the exodus of people from the unrest in Tunisia, and it's causing renewed friction over Italy's immigration policy.Lampedusa is closer to the African coast than to mainland Italy and has recently seen its population of 5,000 Italians double, as refugees pour in from north Africa.They tell reporter Zoe de Bussiere that risking their lives to escape on packed boats is better than staying amidst the upheaval in Tunisia.While many are being moved to the Italian mainland to be processed, the Italians on Lampedusa say their island is being overwhelmed, and their reputation as a tourist destination is in jeopardy.MY LAI MEMORIESThe massacre at My Lai in Vietnam in 1968 was one of the war's most horrific events... US troops raided the small village and killed hundreds of Vietnamese civilians. Now a new feature film about the tragedy, Letters from Son My, is bringing back painful memories for those involved.Director Le Dan tells video journalist David Brill that he wants to remind people, particularly the younger generation, what happened and ensure such an event is never repeated.David was a cameraman in the Vietnam War and during this return trip for Dateline, he also visits the scene of the massacre and meet locals who survived |
