Description 1 online resource (26 min.)
Summary This video addresses the unique challenges of engaging Juveniles who have been adjudicated and then mandated to treatment. Rick Cresta works with Trevor, a 16-year-old African American male who has been placed in the custody of the Department of Youth Services following a new assault charge and violation of his probation by not attending school and not following his curfew. Rick demonstrates specific strategies for overcoming Trevor's treatment resistance including empathy, giving Trevor a sense of control, and earning his trust. We see how Rick skillfully demonstrates the beginning of a therapeutic bond with Trevor. Rick Cresta is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker. His clinical practice specializes in work with court-involved adolescents and focuses on substance abuse, gang-involvement, trauma recovery, violence, and recidivism prevention. He has spent the past 25 years working with adolescents in a variety of settings including schools, residential programs, and home and community-based treatment
