Summary In 1897, Havelock Ellis published the first English medical textbook on homosexuality, Sexual Inversion, which he had co-authored with the late John Addington Symonds in the early years of the 1890s. This text, having been published the preceding year in German, was banned by Symonds' literary executor; the next edition was banned as an obscene publication in the 'Bedborough Trial'. Finally, the text was published in a new edition in America in 1901, and was updated in 1915 to take account of the new Freudian theories of sexuality. The original 1897 edition contained 33 original case histories of homosexual men and women, and was an important text in the fight against the legal oppression of homosexuality in England. This new edition of the joint-authored 1897 text, including John Addington Symonds' appendix on Greek love that was adapted for the original publication, situates the work in its intellectual and social contexts, and provides a fully-edited text for both students and historians of psychiatry and sexuality
