"In this book Engle attempts to ground psychology and philosophy on his concept of "interest" (the consciousness that accompanies any mental tendency that terminates upon mental objects or stimulate the construction of them). It is a kind of super-intentionality--the nexus of the mind--and is identical with the consciousness of process. It is so fundamental to cognition, feeling and will that it may be termed the "mental ultimate" that shows itself as cognitive interest, affective interest, and conative interest. This theory includes such concepts as the interest moment, glint of meaning, instantaneous mental recapitulation, and instinctive judgments and provides a genetic explanation of feelings and emotions. The concept of interest as seen as the explanatory principles underlying the philosophies of practical life, psychology, life development, law and government, education, history, ethics, and religion, thus providing a synthesis of them--a synthetic philosophy."
