Summary |
The ACU Art Collection: Contemporary visions, is the third book in the Australian Catholic University series that showcases the institution's art collection. It is preceded by the volumes New perspectives (2020) and First impressions (2020). This volume focuses on modern and contemporary artworks held in the collection, all of which have been produced since 1950.Contemporary visions reveals some of the richness and diversity that comprises contemporary art, featuring the work of sixty-four artists, largely from around Australia, to explore individual practices and key directions in art today. Including both acquired and commissioned artworks across a broad range of mediums, the book brings artists from different locations, backgrounds and generations into conversation. No single theme connects the works, although together they express the texture of contemporary art. Many of the artworks will be familiar to the ACU campus community, for we seek to make the collection accessible through public display across our eight campuses. The publication adds to the accessibility of the collection through new writings by some of Australia's leading academics and art commentators, who provide perceptive insights into the works. These investigations and responses offer avenues through which to engage with the ideas that preoccupy artists, and they illuminate the contexts in which the artworks were created. In keeping with the traditional ethos of a Catholic university, the collection has a deliberate leaning towards humanity and spirituality. And while by its nature contemporary art might be thought of as breaking with tradition, it continues to respond to the very human and societal issues that shape our world. Contemporary art has the capacity to engage the curious mind, challenging and inspiring us within a framework of largely shared values and experiences. In the traumatic and unsettling context of recent times, perhaps the contemporary visions and reflections assembled here provide some hope and optimism. The works selected come from a collection that is bespoke and contained compared with the large art collections of many institutions, yet it holds some impressive artworks of which we are justly proud. We hope you will be intrigued by the treasures in this book, which together express some of the diversity of subject matter, style and medium that contemporary artists employ to capture the spirit of our age |
