Summary The forgotten story of the world's first blitzIn autumn 1916 a wave of panic spread across London and South East England. Hundreds of thousands of residents fled the city, whilst others sought refuge deep underground.A new type of terror had arrived. Just as science fiction writers had predicted, Britain was being attacked from the sky. Known as "Iron Thunderstorms" in Germany, the Zeppelin's bombing raids ushered in a new style of warfare, a style that would become a defining feature of twentieth century combat. The First Blitz is the little known story of Germany's WW1 bombing raids on London using Zeppelins. This was one of the first aerial bombing campaigns against a civilian population and the psychological effect was every bit as powerful as the blitz of the Second World War. As the raids continued, and civilian lives were lost, the British public began demanding the withdrawal of troops from the front line to help defend against the Zeppelins. A team of archaeologists have excavated the archaeological remains of this aerial defence network to reveal the story of this home defence system, and how it became an effective deterrent to the Zeppelins.
