Anja, Derek and Simon hit the high seas with the project's lead researcher, Dr Daniel Ierodiaconou, to see what lies beneath Victoria's coastal waters.KOALASIn the Great Otway National Park and surrounding private land, there are as many as 18 koalas per hectare - the highest density ever recorded. The national average in Australia is one koala for every two hectares. But this giant koala colony is eating itself out of their habitat by literally stripping the forest bare. Wildlife biologist Dr Desley Whisson has been studying the population to build a picture of how the koala-habitat system works and develop ways to preserve the koalas and the habitat they depend on.
