Summary |
MAPPING THE OCEAN FLOORMuch of our underwater domain remains unexplored and unknown. In many ways, we know less about the seafloor habitats than we do about the surface of Mars. But how can we protect these precious environmental assets for future generations if we don't know what is out there? The simple answer is we can't. But a team of pioneering scientists are on the case. They are delving below the surface to uncover the secrets of this uncharted frontier. Anja, Derek and Simon hit the high seas with the project's lead researcher, Dr Daniel Ierodiaconou, to see what lies beneath Victoria's coastal waters.KOALASIn the Great Otway National Park and surrounding private land, there are as many as 18 koalas per hectare - the highest density ever recorded. The national average in Australia is one koala for every two hectares. But this giant koala colony is eating itself out of their habitat by literally stripping the forest bare. Wildlife biologist Dr Desley Whisson has been studying the population to build a picture of how the koala-habitat system works and develop ways to preserve the koalas and the habitat they depend on. The intrepid trio join in the field work and get close and cuddly with some baby koalas.CAPE OTWAY LIGHTHOUSEThis picture perfect location sets the scene for our reporters to examine how ships are kept safe along this notoriously dangerous coastline. Derek examines the workings of a lighthouse from inside the lens (literally) and Simon demonstrates modern navigation systems |
