Summary |
The Money Programme investigates tobacco smuggling, now a huge criminal business. This report reveals how Britain has become one of the world's leading markets, and up to a third of all cigarettes smoked in this country may now be contraband. While smugglers are making a fortune from this trade, Britain's economy is losing billions of pounds in uncollected tax. The Money Programme traces the trail of contraband across Europe. The film uncovers the smugglers at work and finds the salesmen enjoying a booming trade back in Britain. The programme looks at how this criminal business has taken such a hold and asks how it can be tackled - should we crack down more heavily on those responsible or simply cut taxes? |
