CHILDREN OF THE STARSAutism is a growing problem around the world... in China it's estimated 7.5 million children are autistic, but many lack proper diagnosis or treatment. On Tuesday's Dateline, Amy Wang meets eight-year-old Sun Chao, whose mother tearfully ties him to a chair each day as a last resort to stop his compulsive self-harming. Doctors have confirmed he is autistic, but his impoverished family say they have nowhere to turn to get help. It's a story repeated across China, where autism was virtually unrecognised until the 1990s. Amy also spends time with pupils at the private Bolin School for autism, where there are 80 teachers for the 50 children, and a parent on hand throughout the day. It uses a unique, and chaotic, curriculum to stimulate the children and encourage them to socialise, but such treatment is a luxury that few can afford. It's a confronting story of the haves and have nots, so what hope is there for Sun Chao and the thousands of children like him?THE VIGILANTESIt's estimated that 70,000 people have now died in Mexico's drug war over the last six years, with violent gangs holding communities to ransom. But with official action having little impact, some areas are now taking the law into their own hands. On Tuesday's Dateline, Ross McDonnell from The Global Mail reports from the west coast state of Guerrero, where he meets the masked and heavily armed commanders of the community police. This group of self-appointed vigilantes now patrols the streets, detaining alleged criminals, naming and shaming them in front of the community, and jailing them. But human rights concerns have grown as quickly as crime has reduced, with the community police seemingly having little regard for Mexico's official legal system.CLASH OF CULTURESEaster Island is famous for its giant statues, which have been watching quietly over this remote part of Chile for centuries. But the indigenous Rapanui people who created them claim their culture is increasingly under threat from outsiders attracted to the island's charms. On Tuesday's Dateline, Nick Lazaredes reports on the influx of tourists and permanent immigrants from mainland Chile, who the Rapanui say are taking over their traditional land and threatening their way of life. There are fears the dispute between the indigenous population and Chilean authorities could lead to a repeat of the past's violent clashes, amid ever increasing calls for the island's independence |
