Summary |
Buffalo Bill turned the American West into the American Story. The American west was a wild frontier filled with Cowboys and Indians, battles and blood. All the elements of the western adventure can be wrapped up into the legend of Buffalo Bill. While the wild American west only existed for most in a dime novel story, Buffalo Bill was experiencing it first hand. He turned his experiences into entertainment, bringing the Wild West to the world. Before he was Buffalo Bill, he was William Cody. A man who grew up in pre-civil war Kansas. In his twenties, Cody went into the American west to join the war with the Plains Indians. Cody's first job in the war was as a scout, in charge of tracking down army deserters, which led him to eventually combating with Native Americans. William Cody was what every Easterner pictured a frontier hero to be - tall, handsome, confident, charismatic, and struggling to subdue Indian savagery. He realised that he could do more then just live his life; he could market it as entertainment, and that millions around the world would pay to hear his stories.Cody created a story and a show where he was the star. His shows were a frontier fantasy filled with Cowboys, Indians, horses, guns, and even the famous sharp shooter Annie Oakley. It was a show that took the audience to another place. A wild wilderness which was slowly disappearing, and few ever got the chance to experience. It was a live action extravaganza. Cody dazzled millions in America, London, Paris, Rome and Barcelona, cementing the legend of the Wild West in the minds of people around the globe. This documentary tells the story of America's first cultural export. Told through rich archival materials and revealing interviews, Buffalo Bill explores both the myth and the man behind America's favourite frontiersman, the celebrated Buffalo Bill.
