"This manual describes a training program for psychologists, organized around the study of a mental hospital. Research projects are described that have as their scope the institutional analysis of a hospital and development of the therapeutic potentials of a hospital, viewed as a therapeutic community. Spelled out in detail are the roles that psychology trainees can play in the research projects. Also outlined are lectures and discussion material, drawn from diverse areas of psychology, and from other social and behavioral sciences, which are coordinated with the research projects. General objectives of the program are (1) to study the hospital (or, more exactly, to participate in a "self-analysis" of the hospital in the sense which will be described later); (2) to use results of the study and related action research to further the hospital's goals and, particularly, its potentialities as a therapeutic community; (3) to develop psychologists who can function in such a community, and (4) to help in the development of techniques and in the discovery of data out of which may come a comprehensive social psychology of mental illness and of clinical installations. The manual may be used as a guide for a training program (a) for university students; (b) for hospital interns; and (c) as inservice training for hospital staff"--Introduction.
