Summary This week on Catalyst: Coal Dust - the health fallout; Bike Rage - 70% of cyclists cop it but who's to blame? Quantum Computing - the holy grail of calculations.COAL DUSTThe health fallout. Respiratory disease from airborne particle pollution is a significant public health issue for coal communities worldwide. No nation on earth exports more coal than Australia. Nearly half of our black coal comes from the Hunter Valley alone. Residents are worried that the existing coal traffic is increasing levels of harmful particulate pollution in their air. Mark Horstman examines the issues. BIKE RAGE70% of cyclists cop it but who's to blame? Cycling has grown in Australia over the past ten years, and there is a perception that more cycling is leading to increased aggression towards bikers on the road. But why do drivers seem to rage against cyclists? Surveys suggest that drivers view cyclists as 'the other' and are quick to judge them based on emotions rather than logic. It turns out that the same psychological mechanisms which drive racism and sexism could also be causing this ire towards cyclists. Simon Pampena experiences the rage.QUANTUM COMPUTINGThe holy grail of calculations. For the past decade, a global race has been running to build a mythical machine, the holy grail of calculations ... a quantum computer. Earlier this year Google announced they'd bought one - the D-Wave Two. Does this mean the race is over? Well ... not quite. The D-Wave Two, though costing Google around a cool $10 million, is currently only good for a certain class of problem. Here in Australia, teams at the University of New South Wales are working on a version that will have a much broader application. Graham Phillips dons full clean room regalia to check out this cutting edge research
