Summary Among the thirsty bushes of the Kalahari Desert roams a small, furry hero, the meerkat. As he digs around under the dry ground for his next meal, a hawk takes notice and swiftly dives. A nearby clanmate sees the danger and gives a sharp shriek of alarm. At once, a multitude bolts away to the nearby burrow, while the hawk, with no prey to hunt, soars back skyward. Renowned Cambridge scientist, Tim Clutton-Brock, has followed this meerkat clan intimately for the past five years. He shows us how these critters fight the heavy odds against them by helping each other. They join forces to hunt, build homes, feed the young and protect themselves. Clutton-Brock also shows the dark side of meerkat life. Only one couple is allowed to breed and when this pair is up for replacement, fierce competition can flair up within the clan, resulting in the murder of a litter as new leaders emerge
