Summary |
Merlin has been sent to Britain by his father Ambrosius to lure Vortigen and his army South. Now Merlin has led Vortigern into the heart of a mountain to a great underground lake. He tells Vortigern that beneath the waters of the lake lies the answer to his troubles. Vortigern orders the lake to be drained. By trickery Merlin produces from the mud of the drained lake his Red Dragon brooch. He tells Vortigern that this is a deadly sign - it means that the Red Dragon rules in North Wales, overpowering the White Dragon of Vortigern. Panic stricken, Vortigern orders his army to retreat to the south. Events now move swiftly. Merlin with his gift of 'the sight' knows that his father Ambrosius has already landed in the south with his army. Merlin sends Ralf forward to contact Ambrosius, whilst he himself returns to Maridunum to visit his mother in the convent. There he finds her near to death. Vortigern takes up position by the water at Doward. Merlin, Ambrosius and Uther move swiftly through the valleys and confront him there. Uther's first attack is beaten back, so Merlin devises a new plan of attacking Vortigern by fire and water. His plan works - Vortigern's position is overcome and destroyed and Vortigern is killed. Ambrosius is now the King of All Britain |
