Summary Footy - The La Perouse Way is the story of the Panthers, a rugby league club located in the bustling multicultural Sydney suburb of La Perouse. The La Perouse Panthers have a long standing tradition as a successful football club in all age groups, dominating the local south Sydney Rugby league competition and the New South Wales Aboriginal knockout. They have always been considered the team to beat for many generations, and pride and emotions always run high. Through the La Perouse Panthers many racial barriers have been broken down. Footy - The La Perouse Way follows a season with A Grade Coach Chris Sait; discovering first hand the enormous pressure he is under as well as the time, effort, and personal sacrifices he makes in order to keep this club and community's hopes alive for yet another successful year. Delving deeply into Chris's personal thoughts, we discover what makes this extraordinary man tick, amongst all the pressures he faces throughout the year to win a premiership, a goal that is held high, as it does much to encourage the next generation of young footballers who will hopefully go on to play "A" Grade in years to come.It gives a first hand look at how the strength of this multicultural bond and comradeship is held together, as it is tested. Win or lose, this club and community know they always have great friendships to fall back on. While this mix of cultures may seem ideal and inevitable to some, it is not widely accepted and the community is often criticized by other aboriginal communities. As the Aboriginal people of La Perouse try to maintain their cultural heritage through their own song and dance, the criticism of living the white man's way is difficult and hard to swallow. The people of La Perouse are proud of who they are and feel as though they have been misjudged. They see a bright future for Aboriginal people all over Australia and recognise life is full of many hurdles. So begins the La Perouse Panthers annual journey. It is the journey of a community, whose beginnings were marked by racial division and the suffering it brought, and its embracing of football as a starting point to put these historic differences behind it. La Perouse has become a unique and prosperous mix of black and white cultures, working together side-by-side in all aspects of life, with respect, honor, integrity and trust.
