Summary Part of SBS's Australian Documentary Season, Secrets and Lives, Living the End is powerful and moving documentary that follows the very personal journeys of three chronically ill people as they move towards death. For Mark, Katie and Robert, death is about to happen sooner rather than later. When Mark Cherry turned 50 he received a diagnosis of lung cancer with metastasised tumours in the brain, liver and bones. Katie Muncie was just 25 years old when diagnosed with diffused systematic scleroderma; and 79 year old Robert Lloyd has been diagnosed with cancer of the lung. For Mark, the diagnosis was an indescribable shock. He was a surfer who enjoyed a physically active lifestyle. Katie, a graphic artist married with two small children, seems wise far beyond her years. Knowing and accepting the possibility of death has given her a new found enthusiasm for life. And Robert suspected he had cancer before he was diagnosed. It is a surprise but not a shock. He decides against any treatment to prolong his life, and is happy to let nature take its course.Through Mark, Katie and Robert's stories of travelling towards death, the program is not only a moving meditation on death itself, but an affirmation of the intensity of life. For them, death is not a light that goes out, but a light that turns on, sharpening and illuminating everything it surrounds. (Commissioned by SBS) (Documentary) M (L) CC
