Summary Following on from the national award-winning and critically acclaimed series Once Upon a Time in Cabramatta which aired in 2012, Once Upon A Time in Punchbowl is the untold story of how the Lebanese community overcame the odds and found its place in multicultural Australia. This four-part documentary series hears from community leaders, police, families and individuals, as they combine to tell the compelling and dramatic story of a proud and resilient community, under intense pressure and scrutiny. After 9/11 the War on Terror makes many in the Lebanese Australian community feel their loyalty is being unfairly questioned. Zaky Mallah is a Punchbowl teenager recovering from the early death of his parents. Searching for answers in Islam he looks for meaning in jihad. As the Howard Government introduces new anti-terrorist laws, Zaky becomes the first Australian in history to be charged under the new counter-terrorist laws with planning acts of terrorism. Elsewhere in Sydney, for decades two worlds have shared Cronulla Beach, the Western Suburbs and the Cronulla Shire. On December 4, 2005 after years of mounting tension a fight breaks out between off duty life guards and a group of Lebanese Australian men. The media fans the flames of racism and the message is clear: Arabs are attacking the Aussie way of life. At 7.30am Sunday December 11 a crowd of thousands gather at Cronulla. As the Cronulla Riots flash around the world, many Australians are outraged and shamed by the violence. But the horror has only just begun. Angry Lebanese Australian men are about to seek revenge.
