A relationship is established between initial returns and long-term performance in the IPO market. Issues with high initial returns outperform the market as well as issues with low initial returns in the year following their offering. Common factors in IPO returns explaining the difference in returns are derived. Implications for theories of IPO underpricing and performance are discussed
