Summary "This book is for doctors who want to improve their skill in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of psychosomatic disorders. The language is informal and the emphasis clinical rather than theoretical. Since the focus is upon diagnosis and treatment, the material dealing with theory and research is minimal; it is, however, sufficient to provide a conceptual anchor. The reader will need to consult other sources for a more inclusive discussion of brain chemistry, neurophysiology, endocrinology, dynamic psychology, and psychosomatic medicine. The intimate and inseparable relationship between feelings and their somatic counterparts has been recognized throughout medical history. Although the word "psychosomatic" is a semantic superfluity, it still enjoys common usage and is therefore employed here. Doctors need to be reminded that chronically disturbed emotions are accompanied by chronically disturbed physiology and that treatment of one with neglect of the other is untenable"--Preface.
