Summary |
Home visitation nurses have a limited amount of time to provide services to young families. As unintentional childhood injuries are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children, counseling on injury prevention is warranted. Nurses are well-positioned to conduct a brief environmental assessment of client homes; however, not all nurses are trained to provide counseling on priority injury topics or to instruct parents on the use of safety devices that will lessen the risk of injury. Because interventions that address home safety by educating parents in their homes have demonstrated effectiveness, this project was developed to integrate these prevention practices in the home visitation setting using Safe N' Sound, an evidence-based injury prevention program. This case takes a behind-the-scenes look at the implementation process, exploring the advantages and challenges associated with utilizing qualitative research methods to inform implementation strategies. Concurrent to pilot testing Safe N' Sound, we conducted semi-structured interviews with nurse home visitors to identify behavioral and organizational barriers and facilitators to translating and implementing the program. We specifically examined their perceptions of program implementation, intervention characteristics, individual characteristics of nurse home visitors and recommendations for improving implementation. The results of this work informed plans for total implementation and have led to the implementation of injury prevention clinical guidelines throughout the Nurses for Newborns organization, which are being further translated for other organizations that utilize a home visiting model |
