Contents Healing waters -- Changing face of playgrounds -- Tuckshop make-over
Summary Healing waters - nearly 200 people live in Jigalong, a tiny settlement in outback Western Australia. And while there̕s a lot of advantages to living there; the dry, dusty conditions have a direct negative impact on the health of the locals, especially the kids! But thanks to funding from the WA Government and a progressive Health Minister, a 25 metre swimming pool has been built at Jigalong. It̕s like an oasis in the desert. And as Shelly Horton found out it̕s a true case of healing waters Changing face of playgrounds - Safety in children̕s playgrounds is now paramount; this story is about what safety issues a parent should look out for in children̕s playgrounds. Tuckshop make-over - School tuckshops have been undergoing massive changes over the last ten years. The NSW School Canteen Association was set up to promote healthy eating in canteens and to support school communities and food companies who take up the healthy canteen challenge. Blacktown South Public School is situated in Sydney̕s Western Suburbs and has approximately 700 pupils. Five years ago they removed lollies and chocolate from their tuckshop and replaced them with fruit and sultanas. For lunch the children can order fish burgers, lasagne, low fat pies and sandwiches. For breakfast they offer fruit toast, muffins and hot milo before the first bell. Their snacks include popcorn, custard, yoghurt, 100% fruit juice ice blocks, fruit, sultanas and nuts, cheese balls, toasted sandwiches. There are no fizzy drinks, just juices, water and milk drinks. We hear from Rhonda Fogg, the canteen supervisor and Susan Fulcher form New South Wales School Canteen Association. We also hear from the kids of Blacktown South as they line up for their mid-morning snacks
