Summary This book examines how early experiences, at least traumatic ones, can exert their influence on later adult behavior and do exist in memory regardless of whether they can be recalled. This hypothesis is examined in light of current evidence. In this sense, this book is not so much about the acquisition of memories, although this, too, is essential to any interpretation of how well memories are retained. Rather, this book is about the development of the survival of memories in long-term storage and their subsequent recollection. The author considers the neurobiology of stress, the complex role of stress in storing and retrieving memories of traumatic and nontraumatic experiences, and the individual differences that moderate the impact of stress on memory.- In this book, the author tries to present a balanced perspective of what the data indicate, leaving much of the theoretical speculation until the final chapter. What is known about memory development from a developmental neuroscience perspective is reviewed. Some of the changes in sensation, perception, attention, and motor skills that directly or indirectly affect memory are summarized
