In the 1980's Japanese capital integrated the Gold Coast into global flows of money and services, and so converted it from an Australian tourist destination to a Japanese-dominated resort city. However, this provided a conservative, xenophobic local reaction among some in the local community that became the subject of a lively debate on Australian national identity
